India fended off a spirited challenge by Sri Lanka to snatch a thrilling 15-run victory in the second one-dayer and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
After posting a competitive 256 for 9, the visitors quelled Sri Lankan late fightback to stop them at 241 with four balls to spare in a pulsating floodlit encounter. Visiting fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who took three wickets in the first match, returned figures of four for 56 from his nine overs and Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar and Pragyan Ojha chipping in with a wicket apiece. Thilina Kandamby's brilliant unbeaten 93 went in vain as Indians held on to their nerves in the tense final moments to romp home at the day-nighter. With today's win, India have notched up their seventh consecutive ODI victory. Electing to bat, India scored 256 for nine with Yuvraj Singh (66) and Virender Sehwag (42) being the main contributors on a slow track at Premadasa stadium. IND v SL, 2nd ODI, Colombo: India 256-9 (50.0 overs) beat Sri Lanka 241 (49.2 overs) by 15 runsIND v SL, 1st ODI, Dambulla: India beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets (IND 1:0)Jan 28, 2009
An unflappable Mahendra Singh Dhoni led by example as India relied on a clinical all-round display to thrash Sri Lanka by six wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match cricket ODI series at Dambulla.
Chasing 247, India rode on substantial contributions from Gautam Gambhir (62) and Suresh Raina (54) before losing both the set batsmen but Dhoni (61 not out) was his composed self as he guided the team to victory with 11 balls to spare. The ageing Sanath Jayasuriya's 28th ODI century went in vain as the Indians never allowed the islanders to break loose on a slow track. Kumar Sangakkara contributed 44 as Sri Lanka posted 246 for seven wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Both the teams now move to Colombo for the second match on Saturday. This was India's sixth ODI win in a row, coming after their 5-0 whitewash of England at home. With a hip injury keeping Virender Sehwag out of action and Sachin Tendulkar (5) back in the hut in the fourth over, the chase on a sluggish track was far from easy. But with Gambhir and Raina on song, India hardly had a reason to worry. The left-handed duo went on to stitch together a 113-run stand for the second wicket which laid the perfect foundation for a successful chase, besides offsetting the setback of losing Tendulkar early in the innings. Thilana Thushara's ball had pitched bit outside the leg stump before rapping Tendulkar's pad and Kumar Dharmasena, making his ODI debut as umpire, took his time before upholding the vociferous appeal. IND v SL, 1st ODI, Dambulla: India 247-4 (48.1 overs) beat Sri Lanka 246-7 (50.0 overs) by 6 wicketsIndian cricket team reaches ColomboJan 26, 2009
The Indian cricket team, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, arrived at the Bandaranaike International airport here this afternoon and was received by Sri Lankan officials.
The players were given a warm welcome. A large crowd had turned up to catch a glimpse of the stars as they trooped out from the terminal. The Indians had a practice session in Chennai in the morning from where they boarded a flight to Colombo. Dhoni and his teammates will take on the hosts in five-match one day series, beginning with the first ODI on Wednesday at Dambulla. Pakistan v Sri Lanka ODI Series 2009PAK v SL, 3rd ODI, Lahore: Sri Lanka beat Pakistan to clinch series (SL: 2-1)Jan 24, 2009
Sri Lanka inflicted Pakistan's heaviest defeat in a limited-overs cricket international on Saturday, winning by 234 runs to clinch the three-match series 2-1.
Tillakaratne Dilshan's unbeaten 137 off 139 balls took Sri Lanka to 5-309 before Nuwan Kulasekera claimed 3-17 and Thilan Thushara 3-33 to bowl out Pakistan in just 22.5 overs for their fourth-lowest total of 75. Pakistan's previous biggest defeat - in terms of runs - was a 224-run loss to Australia in 2002 at Nairobi, Kenya. Kumar Sangakkara hit 50 and Sanath Jayasuriya collected 45 to also be in the runs for Sri Lanka at Gaddafi Stadium, with Umar Gul taking 3-45 and Sohail Khan 1-52 for Pakistan. Pakistan slumped to 6-18 in the ninth over before Gul hit 27 to save the team from recording their lowest total. Sri Lanka offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan became the only second bowler after former Pakistan quick Wasim Akram (502) to take 500 ODI wickets, finishing with 2-2. Muttiah Muralitharan took three for 19 and Ajantha Mendis three for 29 as the hosts were dismissed for 161 in only 34.5 overs. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thilina Kandamby had earlier hit half-centuries to help Sri Lanka reach a challenging 290-8. Dilshan made an impressive 76 and Kandamby 59 for his maiden fifty to give impetus to the innings during their 99-run third wicket stand after Sri Lanka were sent into bat by Pakistan. Chamara Kapugedera hit two boundaries and as many sixes in his rapid 39-ball 44 and skipper Mahela Jayawardene chipped in with 24 to bolster the tourists, who are trailing 1-0 in the three-match series. Opener Salman Butt hit a sparkling century and paceman Rao Iftikhar returned career-best bowling figures as Pakistan crushed Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the first day-night international at Karachi.
The left-handed Butt scored a 117-ball 100 and put on a solid 168-run opening stand with Khurram Manzoor (83) as the home team chased down a modest target of 220 with 4.1 overs to spare at the National Stadium. The win gave Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second match will also be played today. The final match is in Lahore Saturday. Sri Lanka, who were bowled out for 219 in 45.2 overs, failed to put up a solid resistance and their celebrated spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis were rendered ineffective by Pakistan’s aggressive approach. Mendis, who was tipped to dominate the home batsmen after taking four wickets against Pakistan and six against India in Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup win here last year, failed to live up to the billing, finishing with 41-0. Butt, who reached his eighth one-day hundred with a single, hit 13 boundaries in his 117-ball knock. Manzoor, who scored his previous best of 69 against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi last year, hit nine boundaries off 128-balls before he gave a return catch to Muralitharan with just 52 needed for victory. Muttiah Muralitharan belted 33 not out off 16 balls Friday to help Sri Lanka recover from 5-6 to beat Bangladesh by two wickets and win the final of a tri-nation limited-overs series.
The legspinner smashed four boundaries and two sixes to steer the Sri Lankans to 153-8 with 11 balls remaining after Bangladesh was all out for 152 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Sri Lankan No. 3 Kumar Sangakkara top-scored in the match with 59 after Bangladesh opening bowler Nazmul Hossain took three wickets and first-change Shakib Al Hasan took two to leave the visitors at 5-6 by the eighth over. But Sangakkara's 63-run stand with Jehan Mubarak (16) and Muralitharan's unbeaten partnership of 39 with Farveez Maharoof (38 not out) gave Sri Lanka victory in a tournament that also included Zimbabwe. Earlier, Sri Lanka's Nuwan Kulasekara and Ajantha Mendis claimed three wickets each to bowl out Bangladesh after it was sent in to bat. Shakib Al Hasan hit an unbeaten 92 to lead Bangladesh to a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the triangular series in Mirpur, securing a place in Friday’s final.
With the game reduced to 31 overs a side due to fog, the hosts chose to field first and dismissed their opponents for 147 as debutant fast bowler Rubel Hossain took four wickets and Mashrafe Mortaza picked up three. In reply, Shakib led the charge with an outstanding knock to help his side reach 151 for five and book a place in the series final - also against Sri Lanka. Shakib came to the crease with the hosts struggling at 12 for three, following the early losses of openers Junaid Siddique (nought) and Tamim Iqbal (nine), both run out, and Mushfiqur Rahim (one), caught behind by Kumar Sangakkara off Thilan Thushara. Spinner Ajantha Mendis became the fastest bowler to take 50 wickets in One-Day Internationals as Sri Lanka defeated Zimbabwe by 130 runs in their first match of the tri-series tournament in Dhaka on Monday.
Set to score a modest 211 for victory, Zimbabwe were all out for 80 in 28.2 overs with just Stuart Matsikenyeri reaching double figures. Mendis took three for 15, completing his 50-wicket haul in his 19th One-Day International and bettering the record of India's Ajit Agarkar who took 23 matches to reach the milestone. Medium pacer Nuwan Kulasekera ripped through the Zimbabwean top-order to take three for 13 while Muttiah Muralitharan claimed two wickets. Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews was named man-of-the-match. The former under-19 captain toiled hard on a slow wicket to hit an unbeaten 52 off 96 balls to lift Sri Lanka to 210 for six. Sri Lanka won the second cricket Test against Bangladesh by 465 runs Tuesday - the fifth-largest winning run margin in Test history - taking the series 2-0 after all-rounder Tillakaratne Dilshan claimed four wickets to add to his century in each innings.
Dilshan, who scored 162 and 143 with the bat, took 4-10 in 4.2 overs to help dismiss Bangladesh for 158 after a 92-run sixth-wicket stand between Mushfiqur Rahim (43) and Shakib Al Hasan (46) took the hosts to 144-6 in the unlikely pursuit of 624 to win. Al Hasan was stumped by Prasanna Jayawardene off Dilshan, who then trapped Mehrab Hossain lbw for 5, had Mashrafe bin Mortaza caught behind for 0 and then bowled Shahadat Hossain for 1 at Chittagong Divisional Stadium.
