Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe Cricket Series 2008-09ZIM v SL, 5th ODI, Harare: Sri Lanka sweeps cricket series (SL 5:0)Nov 30, 2008
Sri Lanka rounded out a 5-0 series victory in Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club at Harare Sunday, winning by just 19 runs after struggling to 152 all out having been put into bat.
Zimbabwe, whose spinners had given them a chance on a lifeless pitch at least to try to prevent the whitewash, replied with 133, hardly the stuff of hot batsmanship and indeed they lost their last four wickets for just three runs. This narrow triumph followed two previous close calls, where Sri Lanka had won by two wickets and then by five runs. The first two matches in the series had ended quickly for the Sri Lankans as they bundled out the home side for 67 and 124. ZIM v SL, 5th ODI, Harare: Sri Lanka 152 all out (48.5 overs) beat Zimbabwe 133 all out (44.0 overs) by 19 runsZIM v SL, 4th ODI, Harare: Six-wicket Mendis sets up narrow Sri Lanka win (SL 4:0)Nov 28, 2008
Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis captured a career-best 6-29 as the tourists edged Zimbabwe by two wickets to take a 4-0 lead in the five-match one-day series at Harare on Friday.
Mendis helped bowl out Zimbabwe for just 147 in 46.3 overs and they seemed set fair for a comfortable victory, especially after Zimbabwe had slumped to low scores of 124 and 67 all out in earlier matches. But they endured an anxious afternoon as they just managed to scramble over the line with eight wickets down, making a hard fought 150-8 in 47.3 overs. The fifth and final match takes place on Sunday. ZIM v SL, 4th ODI, Harare: Sri Lanka 150 for 8 (47.3 overs) beat Zimbabwe 146 all out (46.3 overs) by 2 wicketsZIM v SL, 3rd ODI, Harare: Sri Lanka edge Zimbabwe to claim series (SL 3:0)Nov 24, 2008
Sri Lanka clinched their one-day series with Zimbabwe, and remain on course for a sweep of the five-game series, after claiming a narrow five-run win from a rain-affected match in Harare.
The tourists had completed comfortable victories in the opening two matches but were made to sweat for their win on Monday, only securing it from the final ball. The hosts needed six from Muttiah Muralitharan's last ball of the game but Tawanda Mupariwa could not oblige, instead being stumped by Kumar Sangakkara. Sangakkara had earlier top-scored for the tourists with 57 from 59 balls to help them to a total of 171 for seven from 28 overs. ZIM v SL, 3rd ODI, Harare: Sri Lanka 171 for 7 (28.0 overs) beat Zimbabwe 166 for 7 (28.0 overs) by 5 runsZIM v SL, 2nd ODI, Harare: Sri Lanka crush Zimbabwe in second one-dayer (SL 2:0)Nov 22, 2008
Zimbabwe have suffered a humiliating nine-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka after being bowled out for just 67 in the second one day cricket international in Harare.
The Sri Lankans disdainfully knocked off the required 68 runs to win by nine wickets. Their score, reached just 10 balls after lunch, was 1-71 in 31 sedate and casual overs. Two days after a senior ICC delegation turned up to assess Zimbabwe's suitability for a return to Test cricket the country's batsmen ruined everything by cobbling together the dismal score in a backs-to-the-wall 31 overs. The shocking loss follows one that was barely better two days ago in the first of the five-match ODI series when Zimbabwe struggled to reach 124. They've now made fewer than 200 runs in two innings while the tourists have required only five completed individual innings. ZIM v SL, 2nd ODI, Harare: Sri Lanka 68 for 1 (17.4 overs) beat Zimbabwe 67 all out (31.0 overs) by 9 wicketsZIM v SL, 1st ODI, Harare: Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe by six wickets (SL 1:0)Nov 20, 2008
Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan sparked a Zimbabwe collapse as Sri Lanka won their first one-day international by six wickets in Harare on Thursday.
Zimbabwe, sent in to bat, had reached a respectable 124 for three after 27 overs before Muralitharan claimed three wickets in a single over. Fellow spinner Ajantha Mendis then took two in the following over and Zimbabwe collapsed in a heap, losing their last seven wickets for three runs in 3.5 overs. Muralitharan took four for 14 in four overs and Mendis three for 26 in six. Sri Lanka needed 33.2 overs to chase down their target of 128, with Mahela Udawatte and Kumar Sangakarra combining in a second-wicket stand of 56. Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by five wickets to win the Al Barakah Twenty20 International series on Monday.
Led by unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis' three wickets, Sri Lanka rebounded from a three-wicket loss to Pakistan on Saturday to win the final with six balls to spare before an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 10,000 at Maple Leaf Ground. Sri Lanka scored 133-5 off 19 overs in reply to previously unbeaten Pakistan's 132-7. Pakistan opener Salman Butt hit a steady 44 but nobody could stay with him, and momentum was hard to gather as Mendis took 3-23 to give him 11 wickets in the series. He was named MVP of the tournament. Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene praised Mendis and the rest of his bowlers. "It's hats off to them because they created pressure for the batsman," he said. Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Udawatte set about setting up Sri Lanka's first Twenty20 win over Pakistan, putting together an opening stand of 66 in seven overs, easily handling Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul. Jayasuriya hit two sixes in his 34-ball 40, and Udawatte one in his 19-ball 25. Spinners Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik stalled Sri Lanka's progress but Chamara Kapugedera's patient 17 ensured the target was reached.
