Canada Cup Four Nation Twenty20 in Toronto 2008-09PAK v SL, T20 Final Match: Sri Lanka wins Canadian Twenty20 seriesOct 13, 2008
Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by five wickets to win the Al Barakah Twenty20 International series on Monday.
Led by unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis' three wickets, Sri Lanka rebounded from a three-wicket loss to Pakistan on Saturday to win the final with six balls to spare before an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 10,000 at Maple Leaf Ground. Sri Lanka scored 133-5 off 19 overs in reply to previously unbeaten Pakistan's 132-7. Pakistan opener Salman Butt hit a steady 44 but nobody could stay with him, and momentum was hard to gather as Mendis took 3-23 to give him 11 wickets in the series. He was named MVP of the tournament. Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene praised Mendis and the rest of his bowlers. "It's hats off to them because they created pressure for the batsman," he said. Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Udawatte set about setting up Sri Lanka's first Twenty20 win over Pakistan, putting together an opening stand of 66 in seven overs, easily handling Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul. Jayasuriya hit two sixes in his 34-ball 40, and Udawatte one in his 19-ball 25. Spinners Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik stalled Sri Lanka's progress but Chamara Kapugedera's patient 17 ensured the target was reached. Rizwan Cheema's defiance at the top of the Canada order failed to prevent Sri Lanka from recording a 15-run in the Twenty20 quadrangular series on Sunday.
Opener Cheema hit 68 off 44 balls - including four fours and six sixes - but Canada nevertheless fell short of Sri Lanka's total of 153 for seven from their 20 overs. Ajantha Mendis and Dilhara Fernando combined to help dismiss Canada for 138 after 20 overs, the former taking four wickets - including that of Cheema - and Fernando three. Balaji Rao had done his best to stem Sri Lanka's scoring early on with three wickets but a series of solid cameos - the most effective of which came with Mahela Jayawardene's 35 off 21 balls - meant Canada were always facing a stiff task. The Canadian batsmen failed to follow Cheema's example, with the hosts' second-highest score coming from Sunil Dhaniram, who hit 16. Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by three wickets to win their Toronto Twenty/20 clash with just one ball to spare on Saturday.
Pakistan made 141-7 with man of the match Shoaib Malik making an unbeaten 42 after Sri Lanka, who rested skipper Mahela Jayawardene and spin wizard Ajantha Mendis, had hit 137-9 off their 20 overs. Pakistan were struggling at 91-7 at one stage following a four-wicket return for debutant Kaushalya Weeraratne, but Malik and Fawad Alam added 50 in four overs in front of packed King's City ground. Malik hit the winning boundary off the penultimate ball to send Pakistan top of the table in the four-nation tournament which also features makeweights Canada and Zimbabwe. Pakistan had needed 13 from the final over but Alam slammed his third six and Malik then sealed victory with consecutive boundaries off Nuwan Kulasekara. When Sri Lanka batted, opener Sanath Jayasuriya smashed consecutive boundaries off Shoaib Akhtar, but fell next ball when he top-edged to fine leg. Mahela Udawatte and Jehan Mubarak added 51 for the second wicket but the middle order struggled to push on against Shahid Afridi and Malik. However, the main late action came from paceman Umar Gul who finished with four wickets. Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka are expected to meet in Monday's final. Sri Lanka's latest spin sensation Ajantha Mendis took three wickets and was named man of the match as his side clinched a five-wicket win over Zimbabwe.
Mendis finished with 3-15 from three overs after ripping the heart out of the Zimbabwe middle order including dismissing Prosper Utseya with his 'carrom ball', which turns away from the right-handers. Tatenda Taibu, the former captain, finished on 45 to push Zimbabwe to 106-8 off 17 overs in match shortened by the damp outfield at the King's City venue. Sri Lanka openers Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Udawatte put on 36 in four overs, before Udawatte was caught behind. Left-arm spinner Ray Price bowled an economical spell which yielded two wickets including debutant Jeevantha Kulatunga and Dilshan. Thilina Kandamby and skipper Mahela Jayawardene were both run out as Zimbabwe reduced the Asian side to 77-5 before Chamara Kapugedera and Farveez Maharoof saw their side home. After their departure to Toronto for the quadrangular Canada Cup Tournament was held up by two days, due to unavailability of flights, the Sri Lankan cricket team finally left the island for the Twenty-20 Tournament last night.
The quadrangular tournament comes as a welcome move for the Sri Lankans, who haven’t played any Twenty-20 cricket since the last year’s T-20 World Cup in South Africa. "We haven’t played any Twenty-20 cricket at all since the World Cup and leading up to the Twenty-20 World Cup in England next year, we haven’t got any games lined up as well. So it’s vital we take this tournament seriously," Sri Lanka’s coach Trevor Bayliss told ‘The Island’ yesterday. Apart from hosts Canada, Pakistan and Zimbabwe are the two visiting teams in the four day competition. Sri Lanka will play the curtain raiser of the tournament on Friday against Zimbabwe and after games against Pakistan on October 11th and Canada on October 12th, the best two teams will play the final of the tournament on 13th of October at the Maple Leaf Stadium in Toronto. Sri Lanka will be without the services of wicket keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara, who underwent surgery on his right index finger in Australia recently. Tillekeratne Dilshan is expected to keep wickets and is named as the vice-captain of the side. 34-year-old uncapped, all-rounder ,Jeevantha Kulatunga makes his first appearance in the senior side while all-rounder Dilhara Lokuhettige has been named in the team after being in the sidelines for three years. Farveez Maharoof, who last played for Sri Lanka in February in the tri-nation competition in Australia is also back in the side after injury while good performance in the ‘A’ team tour to South Africa has earned hard hitting batsman Thilina Kandamby a place. Kaushal Weeraratne, who was part of the Asia Cup squad, also returns to the senior side after missing the ODIs against India at home. The Sri Lankans have rested veteran seamer Chaminda Vaas and ace spinner Muttiah Muralitharan for the tour. West Indies were the third visiting team to take part in the tournament, but after a request by them to postpone the series by two weeks was turned down, they pulled out of the series and were replaced by Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka Squad: Mahela Jayawardene ( Capt), Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Udawatte, Chamara Kapugedera, Jehan Mubarak, Thilina Kandamby, T. M. Dilshan (V. Capt), Farveez Maharoof, Thilan Thushara Mirando, Nuwan Kulasekera, Ajantha Mendis, Dilhara Fernando, Jeevantha Kulatunga, Dilhara Lokuhettige, Kaushalya Weeraratne.
