The first Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka ended in a draw after some late excitement when the tourists lost quick wickets briefly raising hopes of an unlikely result at Karachi on Wednesday.
The tourists averted defeat after losing five wickets for just 120 runs, finishing the match with the score of 144-5 in their second innings. Pakistan captain Younus Khan failed to create history as he fell for 313, 24 runs short of Pakistan's highest Test score of 334 held by Hanif Mohammad, made against the West Indies at Barbados in 1958. Younus had also set his sights on West Indian Brian Lara's highest Test score of 400. Lara achieved the record against England in Antigua in 2004. Pakistan achieved their higest Test total of 765-6 declared in reply to Sri Lanak's first innings score of 644-7 declared. The second and final Test starts in Lahore on March 1. Brothers Irfan and Yusuf Pathan plundered 59 runs off 25 balls as world champions India posted a thrilling three-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the one-off Twenty20 international match at Colombo on Tuesday.
India were struggling at 115-7 chasing a 172-run target before the Pathan duo steered their side home with four balls to spare in the first-ever Twenty20 game in Sri Lanka. Yusuf, who had earlier taken two wickets with his off-spin, remained unbeaten with a 10-ball 22 with the help of two sixes and one boundary. He was named man of the match for his all-round display. His younger brother Irfan finished the match when he swung paceman Lasith Malinga over mid-wicket for a six. He cracked two sixes and as many boundaries in his 16-ball 33 not out. "There are a lot of youngsters in our team and stiff matches like these are a great learning experience. Their spinners bowled really well and made our batsmen struggle," said India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan (61) earlier smashed a maiden half-century to help his side set a challenging target after being dropped in the opening over. Nuwan Kulasekara picked up the wickets of Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina as India struggled in pursuit of 321 in the fifth and final ODI of a series they have nonetheless won 4-1. The defeat halted India's run of nine straight wins in limited-overs internationals that began with a 5-0 rout of England at home and has lifted Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team to No. 2 behind South Africa in one-day rankings. Dilshan made 97 off 117 balls while Sangakkara (84) scored his third successive half century of the series in Sri Lanka's formidable total of 320-8 in 50 overs - the home team's best batting effort in the series. India notched up the record-breaking ninth consecutive win, in a match that was suspended midway through, for 22 minutes, due to unruly crowd behaviour. The match also saw Muttiah Muralitharan celebrating his record 503rd ODI wicket, in his 328th one-day international. Fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been included in Sri Lanka's squad for next week's Twenty20 match against India, selectors announced at Colombo on Tuesday.
Malinga, out of action due to a knee injury, made his last international appearance in February 2008 in a one-dayer against Australia in Melbourne. He has so far played 28 Tests, 53 one-dayers and seven Twenty20 matches. The Twenty20 game starts here on February 10. The selectors kept the same one-day squad for the last two games of the ongoing five-match series against the tourists, to be held here on Thursday and Sunday. Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag cracked blistering centuries as a ruthless India clinched the five-match cricket series against Sri Lanka by spanking the hosts by 147 runs in the third ODI at Colombo.
Electing to bat first, India rode on a 221-run stand for the third wicket between Sehwag (116) and Yuvraj (117) to amass 363 for five, their highest score in Sri Lanka. Chasing the mammoth total, Sri Lanka folded for 216 in 41.4 overs, despite Kumar Sangakkara's defiant 83 off 82 balls. Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha did the maximum damage to Sri Lanka, claiming four for 38. India thus took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series and both the teams will square off again here on Thursday for the fourth match. The capacity crowd at the R Premadasa Stadium found the only solace when off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan removed Yuvraj to equal Wasim Akram's world record tally of 502 ODI scalps.
